Malta (5) - Malta at night

Nach unserer Rückkehr wurden wir von allen gefragt, wie uns Malta denn gefallen habe. Keine Frage, es war ein schöner Urlaub, wenn auch nicht der schönste Urlaub war, den wir je hatten. Das Wetter war meist traumhaft, das Essen war gut und der Wein sowohl lecker als auch günstig. Und wenn wir beides gerade mal nicht genossen haben, dann waren wir mal wieder unterwegs, noch ein paar Nachtbilder zu schießen.

After returning home we were asked if we liked Malta. Well, it was nice even though it wasn't one of our best vacations ever. The weather was fabulous most of the time, food was yum and the wine was delicious and cheap. And whenever we were not busy enjoying either of them we were out for some nightshots.

All over Malta there's always a "festa" where the local saint is celebrated. Everything is illuminated and even the churches look as if it was Christmas. This one was the Feast of St Publius in Floriana.

Malta (4) - Rabat und Mdina

Irgendwie waren wir in diesem Urlaub ziemlich verplant. Zu der fast verpassten Hafenrundfahrt gesellt sich auch noch, dass wir den Tag für unsere vorgebuchten Tickets für das Hypogeum von Hal Saflieni verwechselt haben. Wir standen also wartendenerweise an der Bushaltestelle und - warum auch immer - gucke ich noch einmal in meine eMails und stelle fest, dass unsere Tickets erst für den nächsten Tag gültig waren.

Generell muss ich an dieser Stelle einmal erwähnen, dass wir vom öffentlichen Verkehrsnetz auf Malta extrem beeindruckt waren. Mit dem Bus kommt man praktisch überall hin und das auch sehr regelmäßig und häufig. Der Preis für eine einfache Fahrt liegt derzeit knapp unter 2€. Dagegen wirkt Irland wie ein Entwicklungsland!

Also haben wir uns spontan entschieden stattdessen den nächsten Bus nach Rabat und Mdina zu nehmen. Die beiden Städte liegen ziemlich zentral auf der Insel und gehen nahtlos ineinander über.

Somehow we were with the fairies at times on our vacation. In addition to the nearly missed harbour cruise we also got completely mixed up with the visit to the Hypogeum of Hal Saflieni. While waiting for the bus I checked my emails once more and suddenly realized that our pre-booked tickets were actually valid for the next day.

At this stage I should mention that public transport in Malta is absolutely fabulous. By bus you will literally get everywhere on the island, the buses run very frequent and stick to their schedule. The fare for a single ride is less than 2€ and that is more than acceptable. In this regard Ireland looks like a developing country.

So, while realizing our mistake we simply decided to get on the next bus to Rabat and Mdina. These two cities are located nearly in the heart of the island and they are only separated by a main road.

Rabat ist die südliche der beiden Städte und die Hauptattraktion sind eindeutig die St. Paul's und St. Agatha's Katakomben. Die beiden Höhlensysteme reichen bis in 2. Jahrhundert zurück und dienten zur Bestattung Verstorbener - absolut sehenswert! Natürlich haben wir die Katakomben nicht auf Anhieb gefunden und sind zuerst einer anderen Beschilderung gefolgt, die auch von Katakomben und der St. Paul's Grotte sprach. In dieser Grotte soll sich der Heilige Paulus aufgehalten haben, die darunter und daneben liegenden Katakomben haben eine wichtige Rolle als Schutzräume im Zweiten Weltkrieg gespielt. Auch wenn wir dort eigentlich nicht hinwollten war es trotzdem sehenswert. Das Wignacourt Museum, das darüber liegt haben wir uns dann aber geschenkt.

South of that main road you will find Rabat. The main points of interest are most certainly the St. Paul's and St. Agatha's Catacombs. These two cave systems date back to the early 2nd century and were once used for burial of the deceased. They are definitely a must-see. Of course we ended up in the wrong place at first. We were just following the signposts and when the catacombs were signposted to the left and to the right we followed that direction that also mentioned the St. Paul's Grotto. Also a nice place to see but not what we were looking for in the first place. It is said that St. Paul stayed here for three months in 60 AD. The conjoined catacombs played a significant role during WWII and are also worth to see. The admission fee allows you also to visit the Wignacourt Museum - we left that out.

Stattdessen sind wir dann ins historische Mdina gelaufen, das nördlich der Hauptstraße liegt. Mdina war einst die Hauptstadt Maltas, heute leben dort nur noch eine Handvoll Menschen, deren Anzahl in keiner Relation zu der der täglich einfallenden Touristen steht. In Mdina scheint die Zeit stehen geblieben zu sein, und wenn man sich die wenigen (den Anblick störenden) Autos wegdenkt, könnte man tatsächlich glauben mitten im Mittelalter gelandet zu sein. Kein Wunder, dass einige Szenen der ersten Staffel von Game of Thrones hier gedreht wurden. Die Lage auf einem Hochplateau sorgt schon aus der Ferne für einen spektakulären Anblick. Leider habe ich den aus dem fahrenden Linienbus heraus nicht fotografieren können. Dafür hatten wir leckeren Kuchen in einem Café mit Blick über die Tiefebene, das dem Biergarten in Andechs in nichts nachsteht. Auch wenn mehr oder weniger chaotisch und ungeplant - der Ausflug hat sich definitiv gelohnt!

Instead we walked into the historic city of Mdina. During the Middle Ages Mdina used to be capitol city of Malta but lost its importance when Birgu became capitol in 1530. This goes along with the fact that there have been nearly no changes to the city since then and when you imagine the medieval streets without the few (but annoying) cars you almost feel like being in a different era. It doesn't surprise that a few scenes of Game of Thrones' first season were actually shot here. Today only a very small number of people still lives in Mdina. The number of tourists that conquer the city every day is a lot higher than that. Mdina is located at the edge of a plateau and that already gives you a stunning view while approaching the city. Unfortunately I couldn't take a picture of this view out of the driving bus. But we had coffee and cake in a very nice place with a picturesque view over the lowlands - it actually reminded me of a famous beer garden in Bavaria. And even if that trip was rather spontaneous and more or less ill-conceived it was a perfect day.

Malta (3) - Wind und Meer / Wind and the sea

Wie sich das für eine Insel gehört landet man früher oder später natürlich zwangsläufig immer am Wasser. Und auch in dieser Hinsicht haben wir auf Malta den ein oder anderen schönen Ort entdeckt. 

Bei unserer Inselrundfahrt sind wir als erstes nach Marsaxlokk, einem kleinen Fischerdorf im Osten der Insel, gekommen. Marsaxlokk bietet eines der maltesischen Postkartenmotive schlechthin: seinen Hafen. Das kristallklare türkisfarbene Wasser ist übersät mit den traditionellen Fischerbooten ("Luzzu") aus Holz, die in bunten Farben gestrichen sind und am Bug Augen haben, die den Fischer vor allen Gefahren beschützen sollen.

It wouldn't be an island if you wouldn't get to the water sooner or later. And in this regard we discovered a few nice places too.

While driving around the island with a rental car we came to Marsaxlokk in the East of Malta. Marsaxlokk is a rather small but very picturesque fisherman's village and its harbour is one of the very famous Maltese postcard scenes. The harbour with its crystal-clear turquoise water is packed with the beautiful traditional wooden fisherman's boats ("Luzzu"). The boats are painted in shining colours and the pair of eyes at the bow are meant to protect the fisherman from all dangers at sea.

Im Süden der Insel findet man die Blaue Grotte, in die man auch mit einem Boot hineinfahren kann - allerdings nur, wenn die Boote auch fahren. Wir sind leider nicht in den Genuss gekommen. Trotz schönem warmen Wetter hatten wir im April einige Tage mit ziemlich viel Wind. Und so war auch unsere Hafenrundfahrt um Valetta bis zum Schluss gefährdet, einfach weil die Boote nicht fuhren. Am vorletzten Morgen unseres Urlaubs habe die Schiffe dann wieder den Betrieb aufgenommen und wir hätten es dennoch fast verpasst, weil ich darauf bestanden habe beim falschen Anleger zu warten. Aber: alles ist gut geworden, wir hatten schöne Blicke auf Valetta und die umliegenden Ortschaften. Es wäre schade gewesen, wenn uns das entgangen wäre.

In the South you will find the Blue Grotto which is accessible by boat. Due to rough sea conditions there were no boats running when we were there. Even though we had beautiful sunny and warm weather at the beginning of April there were a few days with strong winds. And therefore our harbour cruise around Valetta was also at risk until the very end. The morning before our departure the boats finally operated again and we nearly missed ours as I insisted to wait at the wrong pier. In the end everything went well and we were happy enough to enjoy a splashy cruise with stunning views on Valetta and its surrounding cities. What a pity if we would have missed that.
